Year 2012 - The International Year of Cooperatives

The UN proclaimed the year 2012 the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC 2012).

UN slogan for IYC 2012 is “cooperative enterprises build a better world”. It should have been add that Cooperatives do this through sustainable business structures, open and democratic governance and fairer distribution of profits. The IYC is a great opportunity to let others know about the value of being a cooperative.

The IYC 2012 Secretariat has developed a national program of events and activities for 2012, with an estimated budget of 1,100,000 AUD. Among the main event, which aim to raise public awareness of the value of the co-operative business model, belong:

- National Launch of IYC 2012
- National Co-operatives Conference – Eastern States (Port Macquarie, NSW) October/November 2012 – focusing on the role of co-ops in regional development.
- Co-operative Business Excellence Awards –in conjunction with the National Co-op Conference.
- National Co-operative EXPO – trade show in conjunction with the National Co-op Conference.
