Housing Projects

Common Equity NSW in partnership with Kapit Bahayan Cooperative are constructing six new town houses at Canley Vale Road, Canley Vale.  We are also working with Van Lang Cooperative in the construction of seventeen one bed-roomed units at Fairview Avenue, Canley Vale.  Both projects are due for completion in late June 2011.

The projects are now well underway, benefitting from National Rent Affordability Scheme state and federal funding, ensuring that the properties contribute to the future availability of affordable cooperative rental properties to families and seniors in the area.

Kapit Bahayan purchased the site in 2007 from the cooperative rental surpluses; and engaged with the Association to Resource Cooperative Housing to develop the project design.  The title of the site was transferred to CENSW in late 2010, to enable the sector to fund the construction and completion of the project.

Van Lang Cooperative undertook a similar process, identifying a site adjacent to an existing cooperative housing provision, purchasing the site with their rental surpluses. Existing members of the cooperatives have participated in the design process, ensuring that the completed dwellings will reflect the needs of future tenant members.   Both projects have an estimated combined cost of over $6million.

The development of these properties represents the first major construction project undertaken collaboratively by the sector and represents a genuine opportunity for growth funded within the cooperative housing sector.

CENSW has worked with architect Hugo Moline in the design of the Kapit Bahayan project, and local architects, Stanton Dhal in the Van Lang venture.
